In the Army, qualified students can earn full-tuition, merit-based scholarships, allowances for books and fees, plus an annual stipend for living expenses. In the United States Air Force, the average annual salary for an Airborne Cryptologic Linguist is 38,201. Unfortunately, the AF does a pretty poor job of selecting for those jobs based on language proficiency. Some linguists are lucky enough to get jobs that require more 'global language' skills rather than military function-specific vocabulary knowledge.
